UPSC Civil Services (Main)INTRODUCTION SYLLABUS Purpose:The
‘Mains’ is the second phase of the selection procedure adopted by UPSC
for selection of candidates for All India Services namely IAS and IPS and
for various Group A and B posts in Central Services. The Mains is also a
written examination and those who qualify are called for the personal
interview. Here again the competition is very tough and less than one out
of 10 candidates make it to the interview.
Eligibility:Only
those who qualify in the Prelims can apply for the Mains. UPSC sends the
form and other relevant details for Mains to candidates who qualify the
Prelims.
Pattern: Mains
comprise of the following nine papers. These papers are subjective and
each is of three-hour duration:
1.
First two papers of 300 marks
each are language papers – first is in English and the second is in any
one of the languages from among the languages included in the eighth
schedule of the Indian constitution. Both these papers are of
matriculation level. Marks obtained in these are not computed in the total
score however qualifying in them is compulsory. The paper on any of the
Indian language is not compulsory for candidates hailing from North East.
2.
The third paper carrying 200
marks is on Essay. A candidate can choose to write the essay in English or
any other language mentioned in the eighth schedule of the constitution.
3.
The fourth and the fifth
papers, carrying 300 hundred marks each, are on General Studies. The
syllabus for both these papers are different. The intention is just not to
test the awareness of the candidate but also to judge his understanding
and analysis of contemporary events.
4.
The remaining four papers are
on two of the optional subjects chosen by the candidate. The syllabus for
the optional subjects broadly conforms to the degree level.
Each of these paper carry 300 marks. The
completed application form for the Mains is to be submitted by the 2nd
week of September. The exam is usually held in November/December and the
results are declared by March. The final interview is held in around May
and the final results are declared by June. Interview
is the last leg of the selection procedure. It carries 300 marks and
around twice as many candidates as the number of vacancies are called for
the interview. The service that one finally gets to join depends on the
rank in the merit list. First fifty or so make it to the IAS.
UPSC Civil Services (Preliminary)INTRODUCTION SYLLABUS MODEL QUESTION PAPERS Purpose:UPSC
conducts the combined Civil Services exam in three phases. The first phase
is called the ‘Prelims’ or Preliminary examination and is kind of a of
screening test to select the more serious and better prepared candidates
for the second phase or the ‘Mains’. Those who qualify the Mains are
called for the interview, which is the third phase, for final
short-listing of candidates. `Prelims` is therefore the stepping-stone for
selection to the Civil Services. On an average about two lakh candidates
appear for the prelims and less than 10% are selected for the Mains. The
number of candidates who make it to the mains is generally 10 to 12 times
of the total number of estimated vacancies.
Eligibility:Any
Indian citizen in the age group of 21-30 years, as on 1st
August of the examination year, with a Bachelor’s degree from a
recognized university is eligible to take the Civil Services examination.
Age relaxation of 5 years and 3 years is available to those belonging to
SC/ ST and OBC categories respectively. Every eligible candidate can take
four attempts to clear the Civil Services examination or to improve his
rank in the final merit list. The restriction is however not applicable to
SC/ST candidates.
Pattern: Prelims
is a written examination comprising of two papers of two hours duration
each. The first paper is on General Studies and consists 150 objective
type (multiple choice) questions. The
General Studies paper covers mainly six topics-the constitution of India,
history, geography, economics, science and current affairs. The second
paper is on the optional subject chosen, from among the 23 subjects, by
the candidate. The format is same as that of the General Studies paper,
however there are only 120 questions.
The GS paper carries 150 marks and the optional paper caries 300
marks. Prelims are notified by the 3rd week of December every year. UPSC publishes a complete supplement on the Civil Services exam in The Employment News. The examination is held somewhere in June and the results are declared by the end of July or beginning of August. UPSC holds the Preliminary Examination in 40 centres all over India. |
