SSC Combined Graduate Level Examination (Main)

Introduction                                                                         SYLLABUS

 

Purpose:

Staff Selection Commission conducts the Graduate Level Examination for recruitment to various subordinate services like the Assistants’ Grade, Inspectors of Income Tax and Central Excise, Preventive Officers for Customs, Sub Inspectors in CBI and in Central Police Organizations (ITBP, CRPF, BSF and CISF) as well as Divisional Accountants, Auditors etc. The exam is conducted in a pattern similar to that of Civil Services Examination and exam is held in two phases. The first phase of the exam is called the Preliminary Examination. Those who qualify in the Preliminary Exam are eligible to appear in the Mains.

 

Eligibility:

Candidates who pass the Preliminary Exam are eligible to appear in the Combined Main Graduate Level Examination. They have to apply again to SSC for the Main Exam in the detailed application form, the format of which is published in the Employment News.

 

Pattern:

The main examination under scheme-A, for all the posts other than Divisional Accountants, Auditors and UDCs, comprises of 5 descriptive type papers. The first two papers are on English and the third is again a language paper but the candidate has the option of answering it in either Hindi or English. The fourth paper is on Arithmetic and the fifth paper is on General Studies containing questions on general intelligence, reasoning ability and general awareness. For these two papers also the candidate has the option of answering either in Hindi or in English. Paper I, IV and V are compulsory for all categories. Paper III is compulsory for candidates opting for Assistants only. Paper II is compulsory for all categories other than those opting for Assistant.

The main exam under scheme ‘B’, for recruitment to the post of Divisional Accountants, Auditors and UDCs, comprises of two descriptive type papers. The first paper is divided in two parts viz., A and B. Part A contains questions on English and part B on General Studies. The second paper is on Arithmetic. Candidates have the option to answer part (B) of the first paper and the second paper in Hindi or English. Recruitment in certain post would also entail interview prior to final selection.

Purpose:

Eligibility:

Essential qualification for all the posts is graduation. For Sub Inspectors in CPO’s possession of ‘B’ or ‘C’ certificate from NCC is desirable. Age limit varies from service to service and is between 18-27 years. Some specific physical standards are also prescribed for the posts of Inspectors in Central Excise and Preventive Officers in Customs. Age relaxation upto 10 years is permissible to various categories like SC/ST, ex-servicemen, and departmental candidates, OBCs etc. All the details are available in the exam’s notification in the Employment News.

 

Pattern:

The preliminary exam consists of only one paper of 2 hours duration. The paper is divided into two parts and contains 200 objective type multiple-choice questions. The first part contains 100 questions on general awareness and general intelligence and the second part contains 100 questions on arithmetic. Question paper is set in both English and Hindi. The preliminary exam is held somewhere around October.
