National Defence Academy (NDA)Introduction SYLLABUS Purpose:UPSC holds a competitive examination twice every year for entry into Indian Armed Forces through National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla near Pune or into the Executive Branch of Indian Navy through Naval Academy in Goa. The exam is popularly known as ‘NDA’. A Candidate taking this exam has to first indicate his choice for the academy i.e. NDA or the Naval Academy. If he opts for NDA as the first choice then he has to indicate his preference among the three different wings of the armed forces viz., Army Air Force and Navy. NDA is an Inter Service Institution and here successful candidates are given preliminary training, both academic and physical for three years. The cadets get a common training for the first two and a half years; thereafter it is relevant to the service that they have chosen. On completion of their full three-year training the cadets are awarded graduate degree from the Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi. Thereafter the army cadets are sent to Indian Military Academy, Dehradun; Air Force Cadets are sent to Air Force Academy, Dundigal and Navy cadets join a training ship before being finally absorbed as commissioned officers in their respective services. However during their training in service academes, cadets are paid a stipend of Rs. 8000 per month.
Eligibility:Applicants must be unmarried males in the age group of 16.5 to 19 years. They should have cleared 10+2 examination or its equivalent. For Air Force and Naval Branches of NDA and for admission into the Naval Academy, Physics and Mathematics are essential. Candidates appearing in the final examination of 10+2 are also eligible to take the exam. In addition the aspirants for the exam should meet certain physical standards, as specified in detail in the notification for the exam.
Pattern: Selection procedure comprises of a written test, conducted by UPSC, followed by group test, psychological test and a personal interview conducted by the Service Selection Boards. Aspirant for the Air Force are also required to take a Pilot Aptitude Test, which forms a part of the SSB interview. Those who qualify in the interview are sent for rigorous medical examination, prior to final selection. The written exam comprises of two papers of two and a half hours duration each. The first paper is on Mathematics and carries 300 hundred marks and the second paper is on General Ability and carries 600 marks. Both are objective type papers and are set in English. The examination is held in February and September every year and the course commences from July and January. A candidate seeking admission to the examination must apply to the Secretary, UPSC, New Delhi on prescribed application form. The application forms are available on payment of Rs 20 from any of the designated post office throughout the country. The examination is held in over 40 centres spread all of the country.
