Indian Forest Service - IFS

Introduction                                                                                           SYLLABUS

Purpose:

UPSC conducts the Indian Forest Service Exam every year for recruiting officers for the Indian Forest Service. It is also an All India service like IAS and IPS and though the central government is their cadre controlling authority the officers are placed at the disposal of different state governments. The pattern of exam is similar to that of civil services, and selection is done in three phases. The exam being prestigious, competition is tough.

Eligibility:

Any Indian citizen in the age group of 21-30 years, as on 1st July of the year of exam, with a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in science (with Botany, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, Geology, Agriculture or Forestry as one of the subjects) or engineering is eligible to take the IFS examination. Age relaxation of 5 years and 3 years is available to those belonging to SC/ ST and OBC categories respectively. Every eligible candidate can make a maximum of four attempts to clear the IFS examination. The restriction is however not applicable to SC/ST candidates.

Pattern:

The selection procedure comprises of a written examination followed by a personality test and interview and then finally a rigorous medical test in which the endurance of the candidates is also tested. Written part of the examination comprises of six papers. The first two papers are on English and General Studies respectively and are compulsory. The remaining four papers are on optional subjects, to be chosen by the candidate from the list of optional subjects. A candidate has to choose two optional subjects and there would be two papers on each of these subjects. Those who are successful in the written test are called for the interview. Successful candidates in the interview are called for a rigorous medical examination, which includes endurance test. Male and female candidates are made to walk 25 kms and 15 kms respectively in four hours. Those who are able to get through all the phases are finally selected and sent for training at Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Dehradun. The exam is generally notified in February and held around July.
