Assistant Commandants In Coast Guard

Introduction

 

Purpose:

Assistant Commandants are recruited in the various branches of Coast Guard every year. The different branches to which they are recruited are the General Duty Branch, the Pilot/Navigator Branch and the Technical Branch. These personnel are given initial training at the naval training establishments thereafter they may be sent to USA for specialized training in search and rescue operations, pollution control etc. Assistant Commandant is  a Group ‘A’ post and the officers in Coast Guard besides getting  good pay also get many other benefits, similar to that given to their counterparts in armed forces.

 

Eligibility:

The eligibility criterion for each of the branch is different. Simple graduates, with maths and physics upto class XII, in the age group of 21-25 years and having passed Second Mates exam are eligible for recruitment as Assistant Commandants in the General Duty Branch.

Graduates who hold Commercial Pilot’s License, and are in the age group of 19-27 years are eligible for recruitment as Assistant Commandants in the Pilot/Navigator Branch.

Candidates with an engineering degree in specified area, like Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering etc, in the age group of 21-30 years, are eligible for recruitment as Assistant Commandants in the Technical Branch.

In addition to the academic qualifications there are certain specified physical standards that a candidate should fulfill to be eligible for Coast Guard. These along with other details are available in the advertisement published in Employment News and other leading national dailies. Outstanding performance in sports or possession of NCC certificates (B or C) is given weightage.

 

Pattern:

Selection is done in three phases. In the first phase candidates are short listed on the basis of preliminary test. The test comprises of question in GK and IQ and is held in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Port Blair. Short listed candidates are called for the final selection in New Delhi. Thereafter interview and medical examination follows. Selection is done twice in a year in January and June.
