INTRODUCTION                                                                                             SYLLABUS

 

Purpose:

Admission to the undergraduate programs in IITs is through an entrance exam, called the IIT-JEE. This joint entrance exam (JEE) is organized by the IITs themselves. A student clearing IIT-JEE can seek admission in any of the six IITs located at Kanpur, Mumbai, Kharagpur, Delhi, Chennai and Guwahati and also in undergraduate courses offered by Institute of Technology at BHU, Varanasi, School of Mines, Dhanbad, and in Marine Engineering Course offered by Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), Calcutta as well as in TS Chanakya, Mumbai, for a career in Merchant Navy. The choice of course and institute is dependent upon the position a student attains in the overall merit list. IIT-JEE is considered to be the toughest exam of its kind, and therefore a lot of hard work and preparation is required for getting through it. Competition is naturally very high for admission in around 2500 engineering seats in various branches of engineering through this examination.

 

Eligibility:

Candidates who have passed 10+2, or its equivalent examination, with physics, chemistry and mathematics are eligible to take the IIT-JEE. A student appearing in 10+2 final examination or its equivalent is also eligible to sit for IIT-JEE. However if selected the admission is treated as provisional, till proof of having passed the qualifying examination (10+2 or equivalent) is submitted. Students appearing in IIT-JEE with the purpose of seeking admission in B.Tech and 5-year Dual Degree program in Biotechnology & Biochemical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur should have had biology or life science as a subject in the qualifying examination. The upper age limit for taking the exam is 24 years.

 

Pattern:

IIT-JEE Main Examination. It consists of three separate papers, of 2-hour duration each, on mathematics, physics and chemistry. The main exam is held somewhere in May or June of the following year and only those candidates who qualify the Screening Test can sit for the main examination.

The exam is notified in July every year and details are published in leading newspapers. The cost of application form is Rs 600/- and the date for submission of completed JEE application is somewhere around first week of September. Application forms can be submitted either at the office of the IIT in the zone of the center or sent by registered post.
