Graduate Aptitude Test In Engineering (GATE)INTRODUCTION Purpose:The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is the threshold test for admission to postgraduate courses in engineering. The five IITs and Indian Institute of Science Bangalore conduct it jointly on all India basis. Engineering graduates who qualify GATE, can seek admission to postgraduate engineering courses, with Ministry of Human Resources and Development Scholarship / Assistantship in Engineering/ Technology / Architecture / Pharmacy colleges / institutes in the country.
Eligibility:Students falling in the following categories are eligible for appearing in GATE: (a) Those holding a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Pharmacy as well as those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programs. (b) Master degree holders in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics or equivalent as well as those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programs. However in case the Masters degree is in Computer Applications, the candidates should have had courses in Mathematics at the Bachelors/Master level. (c) Candidates in the second or higher year of the four year integrated masters program in Engineering /Technology or in the third or higher year of the five year integrated Master’s degree/dual degree program in Engineering/ Technology. (d) Candidates with qualification obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE as equivalent to BE/B.Tech.
Pattern: The examination consists of two papers of 3 hours duration each. The first paper is on subjects contained in one of the two groups, selected by the candidate on the basis of his background at the qualifying examination level. The second paper is on one of the seventeen disciplines to be chosen by the candidate. The medium of examination is only English. The result of GATE is declared in the form of overall percentile score. The scholarship is worth Rs 2000 every month, in addition a contingency grant not exceeding Rs 3500 per year for M.Tech and Rs 7500 per year for PhD is also available. Information brochure-cum-application can be purchased for Rs 1000 (Rs 500 in case of SC/ST) from the specified branches of schedule banks and offices of the participating institutes. The examination is notified around August/ September and the exam is held in February.
