Set Your House In Order

A student preparing for his Management entrance examination sought my help because, he said, all his efforts at studies could not give him success. No matter what hours he put in or what method of study he tried, he failed. For him the (text) pages became blank. His eyes swarmed. His attention wandered. He could not sleep properly. And yet, it was a matter of life and death for him to get through examination.

Normally, in such cases I would advise that come what may achieving a degree should not become a matter of life and death for anyone. However, one may take it as a challenge of life and make all-out efforts to attain it. Failure can not be equated with death. In fact most of the time failure comes and teaches us many positive things provided we have a healthy attitude towards life.

Going back to the student who approached me regarding his failures, many interesting facts emerged that guide us towards the sources of his trouble. The boy had passed through a most unhappy childhood. His mother showed him little love and his father was very strict. They also provided him with all kinds of materialistic help needed for his studies. Now, while his conscious resolution was bent upon making a success of his studies, unconscious revenge was at work in a deeper and hidden part of his mind, venting itself upon his work and frustrating all his efforts of study. As this traitor of the mind at the unconscious level was brought to the conscious level and dealt with, he (the student) was able to apply himself to his studies with success.

By examining your own peculiar behavioral aspects, you may have some surprises. These are crucial and critical aspects of your behavior that you ignore frequently to try to forget. Do not feel perturbed by knowing what you learn about your unconscious aspects of mind through various events or otherwise. In fact, it is very useful to know about the nature of your unconscious. Do not be afraid, do not feel shy or guilty; confess and accept yourself the way you are. The real idea is to harmonize the unconscious with the conscious. So sort out the deeper realities and correct them in tune with immediate external realities.
