Set Your Goal
Many people bring great unhappiness to themselves because they refuse to accept themselves. Someone else’s job, somebody else’s personality always seems so much desirable than one's own. The essence of life is that every one in the whole world is unique. Success, therefore, lies in a single-minded development of one’s own abilities and personality traits. Never try to copy or model other people whose potentials and qualities may be quite different than yours. Groom your own garden. While setting your goals, you must accept your own potentials and drawbacks. Have a proper critical introspection about your own self and only thereafter you should decide the goals that are in accordance with your personal and environmental needs, apart from the resources available to you. Impulsive decision making in this regard would be damaging to your career planning/setting of the goals. You ought to carefully observe inside and look outside for tapping the suitable and achievable goals of your life. Today, most of the students at college level want to become executive in a multinational, or want to join civil services …., become a doctor…., and engineer….. an expert in information technology…., a software expert…., and the like. It is unjustified to have a good colorful projection of your future career. At the same time, however, you should be realistic and practical in setting your goals. Your choice of career should be rational and within your reach. You may like to become a doctor, but if you do not have the required scientific and medical aptitude it would be quite risky and unwise to set ‘medical career’ as your goal. Heaven won’t fall if you choose an alternative career for which you are better equipped with your potentials. Similarly, if you are an aspirant for civil services and your personality make up is such that you cannot be bound by bureaucratic rules or cannot give in your philosophical values of life – it is better that you think twice before putting your efforts into competitive examination. An expert and wise counselor can help you to choose right and realistic career. What you need to do is that you look inside your genuine needs of the life through introspection; talk to yourself; know your merits; accept your weak points and in accordance your potentials and available resources set some realistic goal as target of your career . It is crucial at this moment that despite your determination and single-minded efforts to achieve the goal, you should be flexible in your attitude and likings. If unfortunately, your repeated attempts with dedication and hard work have failed in translating the success – don’t get hurt or depressed. Find out the cause of failure and try for it. But in case you fail to make it, don’t hesitate to consider other optional career. If despite your all out repeated efforts to achieve X have failed – choose Y. And if Y also fails, don’t get gloomy – choose Z. I am sure you won’t have to jump beyond Z – God helps those who help themselves. In fact most people become great only often experiencing failures in their life. But they used their insight and understanding of the world with a broader perspective. So, if you could not become a doctor or an engineer, perhaps you may become an artist, an executive or a businessman. The only thing to remember is that “failure is not negative, it is lack of initiative which is poisonous to the human growth”. Leaders are the ones who take initiative in the group. Developed societies may be differentiated from the non-developed ones merely on the basis of the amount of initiative reflected by their members.
