Job Description:
Those
with higher ranking in the merit list generally opt of IAS, IPS and IFS. The
remaining candidates who are selected get into various other central services
on the basis of their ranking and option. These officers unlike IAS and IPS
officers serve only the central government. The area of work depends on the
service that they enter. Functional
areas of some of these Group ‘A’ services are as below:
Ø
Indian
Railway Traffic Services (IRTS) looks after the transportation and commercial matters of
the railways. It comprises of the Operations Division and the Commercial
Division. Operations Division controls the movement of trains and the
Commercial Division is responsible for all the freight and passengers carried
by trains. Activities of the Commercial Division include ticket checking,
catering, and advertising and general railway administration.
Ø
Indian Railway Accounts Services (IRAS) handles the accounting and
finance section of the railways, which includes monitoring of purchase of
equipments by Railways, calculation of bonus for the employees every year and
managing the income and expenditure of Railways.
Ø
Indian
Railway Personnel Service (IRPS) handles recruitment of all railway staff. Planning of such
recruitment, deciding on promotions, postings, training, welfare activities
issuing orders for transfers, promotions, disciplinary action, payments to be
made in the event of an employees’ death etc all come under the purview of this
service.
Ø
Indian
Railway Protection Force (IRPF) is responsible for providing security to railway properties
such as railway tracks, personnel, equipment etc; inspecting property spread
out in the area, coordinating with the state police and railway police.
Ø
Indian Postal Service is responsible for the efficient functioning of
the postal services, which includes telegraphic services, in the country. These
officers work at various capacities like Senior Superintendent of Post Offices,
Assistant Post Master General through out the country and also in the Ministry
at the centre.
Ø
Indian Audit & Accounts Service (IA &AS) is under the
control of the Comptroller & Auditor General of India (CAG). The CAG is a
constitutional authority and is responsible for the maintenance of accounts in
the states as well as Audit of Accounts of the Union as well as the State
Governments. These officers work mainly in the statutory audit offices under
the CAG. They also serve in central ministries and state governments on
deputation.
Ø
Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS) is responsible for
maintaining and auditing of the complete accounts of the defence services.
Ø
Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) The cadre is under the
control of Secretary (Expenditure), Ministry of Finance. It works for both the
state as well as the central government and also for the Public Sector
Enterprises.
Ø
Indian
Revenue Service (IRS) has
two wings namely Income Tax and Customs and Central Exercise. The Income Tax
wing is responsible for fixing, assessment and collection of income tax. The
service also has specialized branches dealing with the investigation of tax
evasion, statistics and so on. The Customs & Central Excise wing deals with
the checking and levy of duty on taxable goods brought into the country. The
other aspect i.e. the excise aspect of the service deals with the taxation of
goods manufactured within the country.
Ø The Indian Information Service (IIS) functions under the Ministry of
Information and Broadcasting. The IIS is responsible for running government
owned broadcasting and advertising agencies like All India Radio, Doordarshan
and DAVP. The service is also responsible for handling press and public
relations for the various central ministries, public sector enterprises and
defense forces at home as well as abroad.
Educational Qualification:
Graduates
in any discipline and selected through the Civil Services Examination,
conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

Remuneration:
Starting salary is Rs. 13,000 per month
(excluding other allowances)
