Pilot Officer
Job Description:
Pilot Officers come under The Flying Branch of Air
Force. They fly Combat Aircrafts at speeds surpassing the sound barrier
and Transport Planes that carry men and materials. Helicopter Pilots fly
Combat and Transport Helicopters to provide support to the moving Army. They
also airdrop troops and supplies during wartime as well as during natural
calamities such as floods, earthquakes etc. There is also the Navigator, who
guides the Aircraft and Pilot to the target by using the latest avionic
equipment.
The field of Transport and Helicopter Pilots and
Navigators is open for potential women candidates. Pilot officers go through a training of
3-year duration at National Defense Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla (Pune) after
completion of which they are awarded a B.Sc. Degree from Pune University.
Subsequently. The candidates undergo one year extensive training as a Pilot
Trainee at Flying Academy, Dundigal.
How to Join:
A)
Pilot Officer Through
NDA Flying Branch
(i) Type of
Entry - National Defence Academy (NDA) through Union
Public Service Commission (UPSC).
(Three
year training period at National Defense Academy and one year training at
Flying Academy Dundigal)
(ii) Mode of
Selection - Through a written examination conducted by
UPSC followed by an interview conducted by Services Selection Board interview
for those who pass the written examination.

B)
Pilot Officer Through
Direct Entry
(i) Type of
Entry - Combined Defence Services Examination
(CDSE).
(One
year training period as a Pilot Trainee at Air Force Academy).
(ii) Mode of
Selection - Through Union Public Service Commission
(UPSC) and getting through Air Force Selection Boards (AFSB).
(iii) Advertisement

C)
Pilot Officer Through
National Cadet Corps (NCC)
(i) Type of
Entry - Apply through Directorate General of NCC
either 30 Jun or 30 Dec every year.
(One
year training period as a Pilot Trainee at Air Force Academy).
(ii) Mode of
Selection - Through Union Public Service Commission
(UPSC) and getting through Air Force Selection Boards (AFSB).
(iii) Advertisement

Awarded - Flying Officer in Air Force.
Qualification:
A) Pilot
Officer Through NDA
(i) Academics - 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths.
(ii) Age - Between 16½ and 19 years
B) Pilot Officer Through Direct Entry
(i) Academics - B.Sc. (Mathematics or Physics).
(ii) Age - Between 19 and 23 years
C) Pilot Officer Through NCC
(i) Academics - B.Sc. (Mathematics or Physics) and NCC ‘C’
Air Wing Certificate within 24 months leaving NCC.
(ii) Age - Between 19 and 23 years

Remuneration:
Starting salary is Rs. 8,250
(excluding other allowances), which reaches an amount of Rs. 10,050 within 6/7
years.
Note: Short Service Commission for Women is open
since 1992. The Women are also inducted in Flying, Technical and Ground duties
in the Air Force. All other qualifications and eligibility conditions remain
the same except; they must be unmarried (issueless widows of service personnel
are entertained as Flying Officer). Age relaxation is given to those ladies who
are holding Commercial Pilot License.
