Nursing

A profession that recalls the name of Florence Nightingale is indeed the noblest of all the professions in the world. The job of a nurse incorporates an extensive range of responsibilities related to the care of those who are sick or educating those who are well. In a hospital, from the general ward to the operation theatre, nursing is the most important part of the patient care. Contrary to the popular belief, nursing is not a second choice for those unable to gain entry into medical schools. These two professions, though complementary require separate skills and temperaments.

Educational Qualification:

A B.Sc or M.Sc in nursing is essential requirement for those who wish to join nursing. A large number of institutes in India offer diploma, graduate and postgraduate courses in Nursing as well as midwifery courses. The basic eligibility for a B.Sc in Nursing is 10+2 with biology, physics and chemistry. There are three more choices other than B.Sc in Nursing namely General Nursing Midwifery (GNM), Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) and Health Worker (Female) For ANM and Health Worker minimum qualification required is class Xth. Training periods vary from institute to institute, approximately however B.Sc Nursing takes 3-4 years, GNM 3and a 1/2 years ANM and Health Worker courses 18 months.
